How to Clean a Gravestone Without Damaging the Stone: A Guide by Material

We understand that walking up to a loved one's grave with a bucket and a brush is not just another household chore: it is a form of care, and it is usually done on dates that carry a great deal of emotion. That is precisely why it is worth knowing how to clean a gravestone before you apply anything to the stone.

The advice circulating online is not harmless: vinegar on marble, bicarbonate-of-soda paste with pumice, or hydrogen peroxide for rust all cause irreversible damage to a piece that, according to our guide on how to choose a gravestone, costs between 1,200 and 4,000 EUR. The starting principle is set out by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) in its Spanish-language guide: the first principle to consider when cleaning grave markers is to do them no harm.

Before You Touch the Gravestone: Identify the Material

Before applying any product, work out what the gravestone is made of. Marble and limestone are calcium carbonate and dissolve in acids; granite is a silicate and stands up far better; bronze and glazed ceramic need different treatment altogether. One and the same product can clean one surface well and ruin the one next to it.

According to the technical comparison published by the stone specialists Mademol, marble is made up mainly of calcite, whereas granite is composed mainly of quartz, feldspar and mica, is much less porous and is more resistant to staining and to acid damage. To the naked eye, marble shows continuous veining on a pale background, while granite shows a speckled pattern with no veins.

Spanish restoration practice agrees: according to Antiga, on bronze acids accelerate corrosion and metal polishes drag away the patina; on ceramic, according to Zeramiq, the damage is caused by abrasives and neat vinegar.

The Three Mistakes Most Often Repeated Online

Three widely shared pieces of advice damage the gravestone rather than cleaning it: vinegar dissolves the stone, bicarbonate-and-pumice paste scratches the polish, and hydrogen peroxide does not remove rust. All three circulate in guides published by the trade itself, and all three cause deterioration that only a workshop can put right.

Mistake 1: Water and Vinegar (or Lemon) on Marble

Some guides recommend water with vinegar and, on the same page, warn against using corrosive materials. The two statements are incompatible: vinegar is acetic acid, marble is calcium carbonate, and the acid dissolves it. The best-practice recommendations of the National Park Service (NPS), updated on 7 April 2025, say of strong acids that they 'will dissolve the stone surface'. The NCPTT describes this chemical attack on marble and limestone as a 'sugary' texture: dull and rough, shedding grain, and never recovering its shine unless the piece is repolished.

Mistake 2: Bicarbonate-of-Soda and Pumice Paste (and Blanco de España)

Another recipe suggests a paste of bicarbonate of soda and pumice and, for dark marble, Blanco de España (whiting). All three are abrasives: pumice sits at around 5 to 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, against roughly 3 for marble. Workshops do use it in powder form for repolishing, but with a machine, water and a controlled grit; by hand the opposite happens, because the polish is the stone's own burnished surface and, once scratched, it is lost.

Mistake 3: Diluted Hydrogen Peroxide for Rust Stains

Diluting hydrogen peroxide one part to twenty is not supported by conservation practice: the NPS lists urea peroxide — a relative of household hydrogen peroxide — among the products that should not be applied. According to research published in npj Heritage Science, iron stains are treated with poultices containing a chelating agent — one of the most widely used ligands is the citrate ion — left in place for twenty-four hours. This is work for a memorial mason or a conservator.

On the same blacklist are bleach and percarbonates: the NPS lists sodium hypochlorite, perborate, percarbonate, persulphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, calcium hypochlorite and urea peroxide. They soak into the pores and recrystallise inside; the damage shows up months later.

Never Use a Pressure Washer or Power Tools

Do not use a pressure washer on a gravestone. The NPS sets the tolerable limit at 500 psi or less, from about 30 cm away, and warns that pressure washers on the market work at between 750 and 3,000 psi, pressures that damage marble. In the units commonly used in Spain, that is around 35 bar against the 50–200 bar of the equipment.

Above that threshold the water strips out mortar joints, rounds off the lettering and opens up the porosity of the stone. The NCPTT confirms it has documented damage caused by pressure washers and power tools used incorrectly in historic cemeteries. The warning covers anything that spins or vibrates, and hand scrubbing too: the NPS rules out wire brushes, as does Mármoles Irelia.

How to Clean a Gravestone Step by Step Without Damaging It

The safe procedure has seven steps, takes between 30 and 90 minutes and requires the stone to stay wet from start to finish. You will need plenty of water, pH-neutral soap, a soft brush, an old toothbrush for the lettering, a spray bottle and a plastic scraper.

  1. Inspect before you wet anything. Look for cracks, loose pieces, flaking areas and lifted medallions. If you see any of these signs, do not clean: tell the memorial mason.
  2. Remove leaves, soil and flowers while everything is dry: dragging them across wet stone causes most of the scratches.
  3. Soak the stone before applying anything. According to the NPS, this keeps the product on the surface.
  4. Apply the cleaner working from the bottom upwards and respect the dwell time on the label: the NPS warns that departing from the manufacturer's instructions is off-label use. A method commonly used by Spanish memorial masons leaves it to work for 30 to 40 minutes.
  5. Brush gently, with short strokes and no pressure; the toothbrush is only for the lettering.
  6. Rinse thoroughly, with more water than you think you need: dried residues cause staining later on.
  7. Dry the stone and, only where appropriate, apply a sealer. According to that same method, the water-repellent sealer is applied in two thin coats.

When not to clean. The CCUS standards recommend not cleaning if there is any possibility of frost: water held in the pores freezes, expands and cracks the stone. Nor should you clean in full sun or on a broken gravestone. And the NPS recommends cleaning a historic gravestone no more than once a year.

What to Do With Each Type of Stain

Not all stains are treated the same way, and some you should not treat at all. This table separates what a family can resolve with water and neutral soap from what requires a professional. With moss, a mild biocide is always better than scraping: according to the NCPTT, pulling it off dry takes grain from the stone with it and leaves microbes inside that can feed on the calcium.

What the Cemetery Allows: Permits and Municipal Limits

Cleaning the gravestone by hand is the responsibility of the concession holder and requires no permit. Any building work does require one: lifting, repairing, replacing or re-engraving the gravestone. The by-laws also require the grave to be kept in good condition, and some provide for the concession to lapse if it falls into disrepair.

The Ordenanza de Cementerios de València (València's cemetery by-law, BOP of 18 January 2007) puts it in these terms: article 30 prohibits starting any work at all without authorisation, whatever its scale, and article 44.a provides for the concession to lapse where the grave is in a ruinous condition.

In Madrid, the governing text is the 2016 Reglamento de Prestación de Servicios Funerarios y Cementerios (Regulation on the provision of funeral and cemetery services), as amended by Reglamento 16/2025 of 22 December (BOCM no. 310, of 30 December 2025). In Barcelona, the cemetery by-law allocates the annual charge to the upkeep and cleaning of pathways, the drainage network, the gardens and the administrative buildings — not to your own grave. Check the by-law of your ayuntamiento (town council) before any intervention that goes beyond cleaning by hand.

When to Call a Memorial Mason and What It Costs

Turn to a professional if there are cracks, rust or paint stains, dull polish or illegible lettering: wetting a fissured stone makes the problem worse, and re-engraving needs municipal authorisation. As an indicative guide, a thorough clean of a grave or niche costs between 100 and 470 EUR excluding IVA (VAT); family pantheons are quoted separately. That range covers cleaning only: treating rust, removing paint and re-polishing are memorial-mason work and are quoted separately. Ask for a written quotation and check that the company is allowed to work in that cemetery.
